A tale old and trite, but treasured just the same. Common girl, dainty, demure meets gallant prince, imbibing on improbable love. Romance set to tabloid flashes, secrets kept, rumors shared. He waits to be king; she longs to live.

Wedding invites edged with gold. Guests’ elite, crowd to see. The king, firm in reign, taps royal toes in time. Flashing grins, the prince leans close, whispering code-words implanted moons ago. Awakening thoughts, origin unknown, her fingers creep towards planted pistol, cold and smooth. Conditioning complete, deafening sound.

He takes the crown. The king is dead, long live the king.

Challenging myself to 100 words.

Many thanks to Zane Dickens and Rob Eggers for giving it a read prior to publishing.

I am a dabbler and a story teller. Worked as a journalist for local small time paper but have a love of fiction with a to be read list to prove it.
